Date the manager! Haha just kidding ^_^ You should just tell the truth but make yourself sound smart, and tell them how you can help them and all. Make sure you present yourself in a nice way because first impressions are everything!

Professional makeup artists do not work at counters. With that cleared up. You don’t need to have a lick of experience to work at a makeup counter. You just have to have well applied makeup, look trendy and appear outgoing. Don’t lie about the experience because they honestly couldn’t care less. Counter girls are called beauty advisors not make up artists because they advise you which products to buy per their company training. The company tells you what products to give to someone who has oily skin, dry skin, combo skin, etc. Your job is to sell the product not necessarily be good at makeup.
Counters are a good way to get your feet wet with makeup. You can get books and videos on makeup and then try out the techniques on your customers. That’s what I did for years before I was a pro. I worked all through high school and college for 8 years as a beauty advisor at various counters and when I started out I had zero counter experience and was just someone who loved makeup. I came in dressed in a stylish outfit with my hair and makeup professional and in style. They hired me for the “look”. I told them how much I loved makeup and how I liked to practice on family and friends. They hired me on the spot. I used the counters as my way to experiment different looks. The more hands on practice on as many different faces you can get the better. It doesn’t do any good to learn a new makeup technique from a book or video and not get to practice it. After I worked at counters for several years I went to a professional makeup artist academy to understand what really sets a professional apart from a non-professional. Professional makeup is night and day difference from counter work but the hands on experience I got helped me better apply the concepts to a variety of skintones and faces. The biggest thing that hit me in school was how different pro makeup was from what I had done for 8 years. I was very glad to have that counter experience though and it was a fun job.
Dress nicely, and spend extra time making your makeup look good. Do not walk in with glitter all over your face and heavy eyeliner. They are hring a look. Women buy makeup from other women they want to look like. If you walk in with heavy eyeliner and glitter you narrow your marketability and they won’t hire you. Especially at Macy’s where they tend to be more conservative. Let your clothes be the trendiest thing on you but NO MINI SKIRTS OR CLEAVAGE! They see cleavage and they’ll tend to look the other way unless you have other counter experience, then they’ll just pull you aside and give you “the talk”.
Go in there with lots of confidence and smiles. They want to see that you aren’t nervous about approaching customers or applying product on them. Looking shy or nervous will get you an immediate NO. If you have a line you really like and know you want don’t be afraid to say you’d really like this line or that line but let them know you are open to any line. Sometimes if you don’t get the line you want you can transfer to another line after you get some experience under your belt. Good Luck!
